Demystifying Vulnerability at Work

A critical component for creating cohesion on a high performing team is the ability to be vulnerable with each other. Many folks struggle with vulnerability thinking it means they need to be overly emotional at work, “touchy feely”, or openly share private details about their life. However, at the heart of vulnerability is the ability to be authentic and human at work. And as any one who practices vulnerability knows, it takes a whole lot of courage.

In practice, vulnerability is being transparent about when you need help, admitting when you may be in over your head, or apologizing. A few examples include letting colleagues know when you make a mistake or fall short on a project, sharing lessons you’ve learned, or offering up when you are at your growth edges. And most importantly, when you received feedback that is hard to swallow, accept it graciously and apply the lessons, knowing it will make you better.

If you’re trying to tap-into vulnerability at work or in your life, forget the fear of over-sharing and instead look for moments where you allow your insides to shine through thus inviting others to do the same.
