Have you ever spent time looking at individual grains of sand up close? Microscopically – wow! Even to the naked eye, they are remarkably different and beautiful. All together with the other grains of sand, they make up the beach. None of them could do it alone, and without any of them at any significant volume, the beach would cease to exist. They are important, their roles are important, but no more important than the grain next to them. For much of my career, striving and over-functioning, I made myself feel important (and therefore safe and secure) in knowing that I was doing more than what was expected. I thought that was my role.

In the scale of the universe, alongside all of you, my role is that of a grain of sand. I have an important, specific job to do here in this lifetime. The power of the ocean in this metaphor moves me to where it needs me to be to do my work. Even more than that, I know further that I am not in charge of where, how, or when I do the work, or even what that job ends up being. I may get swallowed by a fish, carried away on the bottom of a flip-flop to live in a car mat, or washed down a drain. Perhaps I will learn that beach-making is not the only reason I’m here, but I don’t cease to have value in that example either.

Joining the team at M E Clarke Consulting is me committing to my grain of sand vocation and letting the motion of the ocean and its inhabitants and visitors take me where I am most needed. The beach I seek to co-create with the grains that wish to link arms to do the same is one where our relationships with one another are healed. We create new teams, organizations, systems, and worlds where we see, know, and prioritize the needs of humanity in relationship with this planet.

My 20-year career in talent, leadership, and organizational development has shown me that we are at our best when we are where we’re meant to be. I am privileged to have had amazing experiences and am deeply grateful for all I learned within organizations. I have been longing to bring my experiences, perspective, and capacity to hold change to more leaders, teams, and organizations than can ever be reached within a single one. The time is now, and I am so excited to join my grain of sand with yours to dream the imaginal utopic future we dream into reality, one step at a time.
