Creating Brave Spaces

Adapted from Beth Strano’s poem “Brave Space”

There is no such thing as a “safe space.”
At least, not in the way we sometimes wish it could be: a place free from friction, discomfort, conflict, or missteps. A place where no one says the wrong thing. Where there are no “oopses” or “ouches.”

But we are human beings, living in the real world. And the truth is, we all carry stories and scars. We’ve been hurt. And yes, we’ve caused harm. Being human is messy.

So, when we gather in rooms, around board tables, at retreats or in conversations that matter, the goal isn’t to eliminate risk. The goal is presence. The goal is connection.

It’s about turning down the volume of the outside world so we can hear ourselves and each other more clearly.

It’s about choosing honesty over harmony, courage over comfort, and grace over performance.

Brave space isn’t perfect.
It won’t always feel easy.
It won’t always be what we hoped for.

But it will be real.
And if we choose growth over comfort, it can be transformative.

We cannot guarantee safety. But we can commit to courage. To reflection. To repair.
To returning to the table….again and again and again.

If you’re craving a space that feels honest, alive, and filled with possibility, know this: others are, too.

So, the question becomes not “How do I stay safe?”
But “How do I show up bravely?”

“How can you help create brave space today?”
