Simple Journal Prompts

There is great power in putting pen to paper. Whether you’re trying to ground yourself in gratitude, get unstuck or find a creative flow, journaling is a great for all of these – and more. Here are some of our favorite simple journaling prompts.

If you’re new to journaling or find it hard to get started, set a timer for 10-20 minutes and free write whatever comes to mind. Don’t edit or censor yourself, worry about grammar, spelling or neatness.

  • What is the greatest compliment you have ever received? Write down everything you remember about receiving this compliment, including the feelings and emotions that you experienced at the time and what comes up for you when you think about it now.
  • This prompt is borrowed from Marie Forleo…Take 10-15 minutes and journal everything that comes to mind to finish this statement: “Wouldn’t it be cool if ________…” Write down every mundane, crazy, wonderful, or wacky thing you think of! Re-read your list and circle the 1 or 2 items that make you most excited. Identify 1-2 action items you can do now to move toward that goal.
  • Think back to your childhood. How did you like to spend your time when you were a small child? What brought you joy? What dreams did you have as a child? Free write everything that comes to mind.
  • Is there a frustrating situation that keeps coming up in your life? Pema Chödrön says, “nothing ever goes away until it has taught us what we need to know.” Reflect on what this situation could be trying to teach you.
  • Take a few minutes and daydream about what a perfect “day in the life” looks like for you. Spend some time harnessing fun and creative energy thinking about how you would spend your time. Free write about everything that came to your mind…what were you doing, where you are, who is with you…?
  • What is your “Why”? What gets you out of bed in the morning, what activities give you the most energy ? When do you feel like you’re living and leaning into your fullest version of yourself?
  • Jot down 10 things you are grateful and appreciative for in this moment. Think as big or as little as you want to. Once you have a list of 10 things, jot down another 10!
