Reflections on Coaching

There is an ancient saying that when the student is ready, the teacher appears. This is how I would describe the emergence of coaching at MECC. It seemed to be something that found me, a natural evolution of things. Through strategy, culture work and the healing of conflict and division in teams, my calendar filled up with executives and leaders seeking my perspective and counsel, yearning for growth, for something deeper. Thus, this phrase seems fitting or possibly its inverse: as I opened up, I became the counsel that many leaders sought.

And only recently have I begun to embody my identity as a coach. I intrinsically know that the right coaching relationship can be transformative: it can change the dynamics of what is happening around us (the external reflects the internal); it can lead to deep and profound insights that can reshape the trajectory of a leader and a team. We are generally our own biggest obstacle, our own worst critic. We each hold the answers to what stands in our way; coaching simply offers a path to uncovering and overcoming these self-limiting beliefs. The path to our highest self, often requires getting out of our own way.

And so, if that is how we are talking about coaching, then I am in – I am a coach! In fact, it has become something that I love doing. And let me be honest, I love my coach. He guides me, reminds me, laughs along side of me and continually uplifts what is right and true in my life. Thanks, Jim!

As I embrace the invitation of being a coach, I invite you to consider whether you are ready to transform your life through coaching?
