Staying Healthy as Winter Approaches

With thermostats dropping and daylight waning, there is no denying that fall is here, quickly being followed by winter. It is important to stay healthy during these colder months so we have some tips and reminders for staying well.

A simple practice, gratitude can make all the difference.  After all, happiness does not make us grateful, gratefulness makes us happy.  What are the things, people or activities in your life that bring a smile to your face?  Start a gratitude journal today or maybe commit to taking just a few moments throughout the day to remember why you are truly here.

Reduce Stress
Stress affects almost all of us on some level of severity. It can also weaken your immune system. There are many ways to deal with stress. It is important to find a method that works for you and your schedule. This method is flexible enough to be used anywhere, for any amount of time.  For some of our favorite ideas on reducing stress, check out the Capacitar Toolkit.

Get enough sleep
Sleep can also play a key role in staying healthy these winter months. It can have a direct effect on our stress levels and can also help reboot your system. Resting the recommended 7-9 hours a day is important when it comes to staying healthy.

Stay Home
It can be difficult to miss a day of work due to illness. Few companies offer paid sick days, and many employees feel pressure to be present at work, despite how sick they may feel. It is important to stay home for at least 24 hours after symptoms are gone. This helps reduce the risk of spreading germs and helps you have a full and quick recovery. Presenteeism, the opposite of absenteeism, a new word used to describe people who are present to a fault, such as people who go to work even when they are sick.

Wash Hands
While you may hear this a lot, do you actually follow this advice? Washing hands thoroughly and often is a great way to kill germs. Instead of treating it like a chore, try using the time to relax, and have some me-time, you deserve it!

Drink more water
It is important to stay hydrated but that is easier said than done, especially in the colder months. It helps keep the body healthy and can also help prevent illnesses. Try to drink the recommended 64 oz. glasses daily. Better yet, try replacing an afternoon cup of coffee or soda with a glass of water.

Staying healthy is everyone’s goal during the winter but do not let it get you down if you do happen to fall ill. Take the time to relax and stay well rested. Try not to stress about having to miss work or about the chores getting done. Allowing yourself the time to relax will help with a speedy recovery and will have you back on your feet sooner rather than later.
